Let me Entertain You

How to define Culture? Oxford Press itself has, in its publications, more than 120 different definitions for the term. In this text, I will use the word in the sense of having access to information, books, concerts, movies… Culture as entertainment. It is one of the main means for someone to be inserted in a social context, indispensable tool for developing a country and its citizens.

For a long time it was said that, in Brazil, Culture, in this sense, is hard for the masses to achieve due to its price. Interestingly enough, a research done in April this year by the National Research on Cultural Habits, appoints that this is not quite true: people do not engage on cultural activities because they do not want to. According to 89% of the people interviewed, they do not read more books because it is not their idea of leisure or entertainment or simply because they did not develop this habit (here, in Portuguese). It is a massive number. Is it really the case that the more accessible culture and information is – and for free! – the more we take it for granted?

My experience in my city of Aracaju, back in Brazil, I see as incredibly positive. I have been to concerts, expositions, presentations, orchestras, and all sort of cultural activities of great quality. And for free. Sometimes not advertised enough, but surely taking place. Some of the best concerts I have seen in my life were entirely free. For others, I paid modest prices that were surely accessible for great part of the population (long live the MPB Petrobras project!). Many of these presentations were full or sold out, but many times people simply were not there. And why?

Recently, I read that Zeca Baleiro’s next concert in Aracaju will cost R$120 – something like US$80. He is one of the most talented musicians I have seen, truly one of my favorites and who deserves praise. It won’t be an exaggeration to say I have been to at least 10 of his concerts. Half for free, some paying around US$5-10 dollars, but never at this price. We need cultural partnerships!  We need sponsors to make Culture even more accessible for the population. In Recife, for instance, during its entirely free Carnival, the party is divided in several regions of the city, it is taken to all sorts of neighborhoods – rich and poor, violent and gang-free – exactly to bring culture to people’s doors. They won’t even say they cannot afford the public transportation to get to the party – the party is brought to them. It is these sort of things we need to make sure an already Culturally unaware population doesn’t stray even more from it and loses touch with its own history.

Como definer Cultura? Oxford Press, sozinha, agrega mais de 120 definições diferentes para o termo. Neste texto usarei a palavra no sentido de ter acesso a informação, livros, shows, filmes… Cultura como entretenimento. Este é um dos melhores meios para alguém se inserir no contexto social, ferramenta indispensável para desenvolver um país e seus cidadãos.

Por muito tempo foi dito que, no Brasil, o acesso à Cultura, neste sentido, afasta as massas devido ao seu preço. No entanto, uma pesquisa feita em Abril deste ano pela Pesquisa Nacional de Hábitos Culturais apontou que isto não é bem verdade: as pessoas não se envolvem em atividades culturais simplesmente porque não têm interesse. De acordo com 89% dos entrevistados (link aqui), eles não lêem mais livros porque não é a ideia que possuem de diversão ou simplesmente porque não desenvolveram este hábito. É um número impressionante. Será realmente verdade que quando mais acessível informação e cultura se tornam – e de graça! – mais a tratamos como corriqueira?

Vejo minha experiência em Aracaju, minha cidade, como extremamente positiva. Já fui a inúmeros shows, exposições, apresentações, orquestras e todos os tipos de atividades culturais de grande qualidade. E de graça. Algumas vezes não divulgadas de maneira suficiente, mas definitivamente presentes. Alguns dos melhores shows que já vi em toda minha vida foram de graça. Por outros, paguei preços modestos que certamente também eram acessíveis para a maior parte da população (abençoado seja o Projeto MPB Petrobras!). Muitas destas apresentações estavam cheias ou esgotadas, mas muitas outras vezes as pessoas simplesmente não compareceram. E por que?

Recentemente li que o show mais recente de Zeca Baleiro em Aracaju irá custar R$120. Ele é um dos músicos mais talentosos que já vi, um dos meus favoritos e que merece todos os elogios. Não será exagero dizer que já fui a pelo menos 10 de seus shows. Metade de graça, alguns pagando algo como R$8-13, mas jamais a esse preço. Precisamos de parcerias culturais! Precisamos de patrocinadores que possam deixar a Cultura mais acessível para a população. Em Recife, por exemplo, durante o Carnaval gratuito, a festa é espalhada em várias regiões da cidade, levada a todos os tipos de bairros – ricos e pobres, violentos e livre de galgues – justamente para trazer cultura às portas das casas. Não se pode nem dizer que não se tem dinheiro para pagar o ónibus para ir à festa – a festa vai até você. É desse tipo de iniciativa que precisamos para nos assegurarmos de que uma população já desinteressada culturalmente não se afaste ainda mais de sua própria história.

Helter Skelter

93 official victims so far. That is the outcome of the gruesome events that happened in Norway this past Friday, the 22^nd of July. Anders Behring Breivik, who confessed organizing and conducting alone the bombings in front of the government buildings and the shootings in the island of Utoya during the youth camp of the Labour’s Party, claims to defend Christian values. His goal was to start a 21^st century “Crusade” that could once and for all stop the Muslim influences in Europe.

Norway’s prime-minister, Jens Stoltenberg, defends that in spite of the attacks having devastating effects into the Norwegian society by raising everyone’s levels of paranoia, the country will remain open, democratic and a place where people look after one another. If that is true, it remains to be seen. Still, it is of good hope to see the response the Norwegian society gives in this case, refusing to engage in hateful speeches, and I praise the response of the prime-minister. A lot has been discussed about the upcoming of right-wing parties in Europe. Is this event powerful enough to make people reflect upon their political choices and the power of excluding speeches? I hope so.

What new arguments can the attack organized by a white Christian European terrorist bring to the debate of a modern “clash of civilizations”? Most media vehicles who broadcast the story make sure to remind everyone that Breivik is a “Christian extremist”. Why not to do so when attacks are organized by Muslims? Why is a Muslim terrorist just a regular Muslim and a Christian terrorist is indeed an extremist and “out-of-the-rule” individual? I so not follow any religion – but that just does not seem fair. The New York Times, who prides itself to be a liberal newspaper, compared Breivik to Al Qaeda in “brutality and multiple attacks”, comparing the attacker with Muslims, even when he worked so hard to express his hate for them.

21 years’ imprisonment is the maximum prison sentence a perpetrator can face in Norway. I cannot help but wonder: being considered the worst event to happen in Norway after WWII, what effect a release of Breivik would have in the country 21 years from now, if he is convicted? That price was something he was already willing to pay for “his cause”. How to handle it in a way that doesn’t bring more attention to him and doesn’t fuel the debate of extremists? Forgiveness, reconciliation and dealing with the past are subjects often discussed during our course in Peace and Conflict Transformation. Is it possible to do the same here?

Até agora são 93 vítimas oficiais. Este é o resultados dos eventos brutais que aconteceram na Noruega na Sexta-Feira, 22 de Julho. Anders Behring Breivik, que confessou organizar e realizar sozinho os ataque a bomba aos prédios do governo e o tiroteio na ilha de Utoya durante o acampamento para jovens do Partido Trabalhista, afirma defender os valores cristãos. Seu objetivo era iniciar as Cruzadas do século XXI para acabar de uma vez por todas com as influências muçulmanas na Europa.

O primeiro-ministro norueguês, Jens Stoltenberg, defende que apesar de os ataques terem efeitos devastadores na sociedade do país, elevando níveis gerais de paranoia, a Noruega irá continuar um país aberto, democrático e um lugar onde as pessoas tomam conta umas das outras. Se isso é verdade, veremos. De qualquer forma, é bastante esperançoso ver a resposta da sociedade norueguesa a este caso, recusando a adentrar debates cheios de ódio. Bastante tem sido discutido sobre o ressurgimento dos partidos de extrema-direita na Europa. Terá esse acontecimento força suficiente para fazer as pessoas refletirem sobre suas escolhas políticas e o poder de discursos de exclusão? Espero que sim.

Que novos argumentos pode um ataque organizado por um terrorista cristão, branco e e Europeu trazer ao debate de um “embate de civilizações” moderno? A maioria dos veículos de mídia que contam esta história sempre lembra aos leitores que Breivik é um “extremista cristão”. Por que não fazer o mesmo quando ataques são organizados por muçulmanos? Por que um terrorista muçulmano é apenas um “muçulmano” e um terrorista cristão é, na verdade, um indivíduo extremista e fora do comum? Não sigo nenhuma religião, mas não me parece justo. O New York Times, que se orgulha de ser um jornal liberal, comparou Breivik à Al Qaeda em “brutalidade e ataques múltiplos”, comparando o terrorista a Muçulmanos, mesmo quando ele deixou bem claro o ódio que sente por eles.

21 anos de cadeia é a sentence máxima que alguém pode enfrentar na Noruega. Tenho que imaginar: se este é considerado o pior evento a acontecer na Noruega após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, que efeito teria a soltura de Breivik em 21 anos, se condenado? A prisão era um preço que ele já estava disposto a pagar por “sua causa”. Como lidar com esta situação de uma maneira que não traga mais atenção a ele ou aqueça o debate de extremistas? Perdão, reconciliação e lidar com o passado são temas comumente discutidos no nosso curso de Estudos para a Paz e Resolução de Conflitos. É possível fazer o mesmo neste caso?

Mine is better than yours!

I refuse to write about soccer again. Ignoring the fact Brazil missed 4 penalties in 4 tries, let’s move on to another subject, much more relevant and pertinent. On May 5 this year, Brazil, through its Supreme Court, approved the recognition of same-sex relationships in the country, giving them the same rights as those of married couples. Soon after this approval, the first judges started converting these unions into marriages, being the first conversion done on June 27. For the homosexual couples, that is a great victory. But not only for them: the society has a lot to celebrate. That, however, does not come so unanimously. According to Grupo Gay da Bahia, an active and the oldest NGO for the defence of gay rights, a lesbian, gay or transvestite is murdered in Brazil at every two days due to homophobia.

Let’s take a look at a recent piece of news: On July 18 this year, a 42 year-old man had half of his ear cut off after being assaulted by a group of young men in the city of São João da Boa Vista, countryside of São Paulo. The reason? The aggressors thought the men and his 18 year-old son were gay, because they were hugging each other. (Full article here, in Portuguese). What can explain so many demonstrations of hate and intolerance? Even in the face of so many legal advancements, did we reach a point where we have to fear hugging someone we care about when in public?

Homophobia, for me, can be defined as the reaction to what does not correspond with what the majority of the population identifies with, as well as the implicit norms established by this majority. It is the fear of what is different, it is xenophobia in its most strict definition: fear of everything that is considered strange. It is the belief that one’s choices are so supreme that all the others who do not follow the same path are inferior creatures that do not deserve the same respect and rights. In this planet alone we are approaching 7 billion people. If you look out your window during a clear night, it is easy to spot countless stars. Who knows how many other forms of life can exist out there? How many people stepped on this same Earth before our arrival? And yet, people insist to set out their own rules as the clear norm and consider themselves the ultimate dictator of what is right and what is wrong. Give me a break! Maybe some comedy by the great Louis C.K. helps to prove my point (at the end of the Portuguese version).

Me recuso a escrever sobre futebol mais uma vez. Ignorando o fato de que o Brasil perdeu 4 pênaltis em 4 cobranças, vamos seguir em frente e abordar outro tema,  muito mais relevante e pertinente. No dia 5 de Maio deste ano, o Brasil, através do Supremo Tribunal Federal, aprovou o reconhecimento de uniões homosexuais, garantindo-lhes os mesmos direitos do casamento. Logo após esta aprovação, os primeiros juizes passaram a converter estas uniões em casamento, com a primeira conversão occorendo em 27 de Junho. Para o casais homosexuais, esta é uma grande vitória. Mas não apenas para eles: a sociedade tem muito a comemorar. No entanto, esta comemoração não vem de forma unânime. De acordo com o Grupo Gay da Bahia, a ONG mais antiga para a defesa dos direitos gays, uma lésbica, um gay ou um transexual são assassinados a cada dois dias no país, em razão da homofobia.

Vamos dar uma olhada nesta notícia: Em 18 de Julho deste ano, um homem de 42 anos teve metade de sua orelha decepada após ter sido atacado por um grupo de jovens em São João da Boa Vista, interior de São Paulo. O motivo? Os agressores pensaram que o homem e seu filho de 18 anos eram um casal gay, pois estavam se abraçando. (Matéria completa aqui). O que explica tantas demonstrações de ódio e intolerância? Mesmo diante de tantos avanços legais, alcançamos o ponto em que temos que temer abraçar alguém de quem gostamos em público?

Homofobia, para mim, pode ser definida como a reação ao que não corresponde com o que a maioria da população se identifica, bem como com as normas implícitas estabelecidas por essa maioria. É o medo do que é diferente, é xenofobia em sua definição mais estrita: medo de tudo que é considerado estranho. É a crençca de que nossas escolhas são tão supremas que todos os outros que não seguem o mesmo caminho são criaturas inferiores que não merecem o mesmo respeito e direitos. Apenas neste planeta estamos alcançando a marca de 7 bilhões de habitantes. Se você olhar pela janela em uma noite, é fácil avistar inúmeras estrelas. Quem sabe quantas outras formas de vida existem por aí? Quantas pessoas pisaram nessa Terra antes de nossa chegada? E ainda assim, as pessoas insistem em estabelecer suas próprias regras como a verdade absoluta e se consideram o ditador supremo do que é certo ou errado. Tenha dó! Talvez um pouco de comédia com Louis C.K. me ajude a provar o que quero dizer.

Fading Passion

I was always a fan of watching sports. Being as young as I can remember, I picked my soccer team – Palmeiras – by myself. My dad also encouraged me and we’d always watch sports together. Everything, all sorts. From swimming competitions to boxing, we would see it all. Being brazilian, soccer plays a big role in our culture, everyone knows a little something and has a team to support, even if they are not big fans of the sport. We are five times World champions and our players are often voted among the best in the world. We are known for our soccer passion. And yet, every year, this passion disappears a bit more in me. Like many things in the world, the sport has been commercialized to a level that is beyond acceptance.

The president of the brazilian soccer confederation, Ricardo Teixeira, is in the same position for 22 years. After such time, one startsto create roots and lose sense of limits to power. For over 10 years, he’s been in the center of several corruption and bribery investigations (BBC has great material on that) and it is widely known, in Brazil, that he makes decisions on the matches based on who he is friends with and what are his vested interests. I am not the one who says so. Ricardo Teixeira himself admits that on an interview given by him to the brazilian magazine Piauí (full interview on the link, in Portuguese only). He admits it with such arrogance and so blatantly, that it is impossible not to feel disgusted. How to support a team that is a puppet of his wishes? How to invest time and passion into players that are more concerned with the new contract they are about to sign than with properly representing the t-shirt so many are eager to wear? How to feel excited about the upcoming 2014 World Cup, when we know it is just his stage play to make himself and his friends even richer, with the help of public money? With that, I rest my case. I will always feel a trillion times more proud of our volleyball players, even facing yesterday’s defeat to Russia in the final of the World League. They play with devotion, with respect to themselves, the opponents and especially to those who invest their time believing in them.

Sempre fui fã de assistir esportes. Desde muito pequena escolhi o meu time de futebol – Palmeiras – sozinha. Meu pai me encorajou e sempre assistimos a eventos esportivos juntos. Tudo, de todos os tipos. De competições de natação a boxe, assistimos de tudo. Sendo brasileira, futebol tem uma importância muito grande em nossa cultura, todo mundo sabe um pouquinho do jogo e sempre tem um time para torcer, mesmo que não seja um grande fã do esporte. Somos cinco vezes campeões do mundo e nossos jogadores são constantemente votados entre os melhores do mundo. Somos conhecidos por nossa paixão pelo futebol. E ainda assim, a cada ano, essa paixão desaparece um pouco mais em mim. Como muitas coisas no mundo, o futebol foi comercializado de tal maneira que não é mais aceitável.

O presidente da Confederação Brasileira de Futebol, Ricardo Teixeira, está na mesma posição há 22 anos. Depois de tanto tempo, é comum que as pessoas comecem a criar raízes e perder senso dos limites do poder. Por mais de dez anos ele tem sido alvo de diversas investigações de corrupção e suborno (a BBC tem excelente material sobre isso, em inglês) e é de conhecimento notório, no Brasil, que ele toma decisões sobre as partidas tendo como base amizades e interesses pessoais. Não sou eu que digo isso. O próprio Ricardo Teixeira admite isto em uma entrevista recente concedida à revista Piauí. Ele admite certas coisas com tanta arrogância e de maneira tão direta que é impossível não se sentir enojado. Como torcer para um time que é fantoche dos interesses de uma pessoa como essa? Como investir tempo e paixão admirando jogadores que estão mais preocupados com o próximo contrato que assinarão do que em representar, de maneira justa, a camisa que tantos têm tanto desejo em vestir? Como ficar ansiosa pela copa de 2014 quando sabemos que será palco para que ele enrique a si mesmo e seus amigos com a ajuda de dinheiro público? Paro por aqui. Sempre me orgulharei um trilhão de vezes mais dos nossos jogadores de vôlei, mesmo diante da derrota de ontem para a Rússia na Liga Mundial. Eles jogam com devoção, com respeito a eles mesmos, aos adversários e especialmente àqueles que investem tempo acreditando neles.

Welcome to the Jungle

Today, July 9th 2011, South Sudan officially became a State, the newest in the World. After decades of struggle with the Northern region of the country – including two civil wars, the last one ending in 2005 -, the region achieved, through a referendum held in January this year, the goal of becoming an independent State. Details on reasons, history of the region and what this independence means can be found in several news agencies. As for me, I use this space to wish to the newborn State a good beginning and hopes that one day it can become viable to provide its citizens an acceptable living standard. If you ask my opinion, I do not fully agree with independence. Do not get me wrong: when it comes to countries coming out of colonialism and deciding to take their destiny into their own hands, I could not agree more. But to use religious differences to justify what, deep down, is merely political maneuver,  is extremely dangerous. The North and South could not live together not because one part is Muslim and the other mainly Christian, this is the propaganda government leaders support in order to create grievances. Deep down, it is about political control.

The region of South Sudan – except the new capital of Juba – suffers from severe infrastructural problems. Whenever a new country is created, the money they already don’t have will be invested in new governance structures, which means more drains for the money to escape, for corrupt people to act. It is almost like building a State from scratch. Anyway, if they want to keep South Sudan viable, they need to collaborate with the Northern part, find an agreement on the oil and the final border disputes, so I think this is not necessary to divide the countries. Unfortunately, many people think secessionism in that sense will always solve “minority X majority” problems, when deep down is all about bad governance and structural violence. Still, the best of luck. There is nobody else to blame. So may the people from the country now continue to fight for better living standards, and not accomodate in false hopes that independence is the miraculous solutions for the world’s problems.

Hoje, 9 de Julho de 2011, o Sudão do Sul oficialmente se tornou um Estado, o mais novo do Mundo. Após décadas de batalhas com a região norte do país – incluindo duas guerras civis, a última terminada em 2005 -, a região alcançou o objetivo de se tornar um Estado independente através de um referendo realizado em Janeiro deste ano. Detalhes dos motivos, histórico da região e o que a independência representa podem ser encontrados em várias agências de notícias. Quanto a mim, uso este espaço para desejar ao país recém-nascido um bom começo e a esperança de que um dia possa se tornar viável e garantir a seus cidadãos um padrão de vida aceitável. Se quer saber minha opinião, não concordo totalmente com esta independência. Não me entenda mal: quando países desejam se libertar do colonialismo e tomar o destino de sua nação em suas mãos, não tenho como discordar. Mas se utilizar de diferenças religiosas para justificar o que, no fundo, é apenas manobra política, é extremamente perigoso. O norte e o sul do país não podem viver juntos não porque uma parte é muçulmana e a outra predominantemente árabe – esta é a propaganda feita pelos líderes políticos para criar desavenças. No fundo, desejam controle político.

A região do Sudão do Sul – com exceção da capital Juba – sofre de sérios problemas infraestruturais. Sempre que um novo país é criado, o dinheiro que ainda nem existe é comprometido na criação de novas estruturas de governança, o que significa maiores áreas por onde o dinheiro pode escapar, dando espaço para políticos corruptos agirem. E neste caso, o trabalho vai ser quase o de construir um país do zero. De qualquer forma, se o Sudão do Sul quiser se manter viável, deverá colaborar com o país ao Norte, encontrar um acordo em relação ao petróleo e pequenas disputas territoriais, então não acho que seja necessário dividir os países. Infelizmente, muitas pessoas acreditam que o separatismo desta forma resolve problemas de minorias e maiorias, quando no fundo, tratam-se de problemas de má governança e violência estrutural. De qualquer forma, toda a sorte do mundo para eles. Agora, não há mais ninguém para se culpar. Então que as pessoas do país continuem a lutar por melhores condições de vida e que não se acomodem em falsas esperanças de que a independência é a solução milagrosa para os problemas do mundo.

Destroying Fairy Tales

A maioria das garotas da minha geração cresceu ouvindo histórias de contos de fadas. São inúmeras princesas que superam um problema de vida quando encontram o príncipe encantado. Muito já se discutiu sobre o impacto que essas histórias têm no imaginário infantil – e que se perpetuam quando a gente cresce. Mas acredito que a situação esteja mudando. Recentemente, testemunhamos dois grandes casamentos reais. Kate e Charlene juntaram-se às famílias reais da Inglaterra e Mônaco, ao casarem com William e Albert, respectivamente. Apesar de toda a atenção da mídia, também testemunhei aquecidos debates sobre o atual papel da mulher e o interesse por príncipes e contos de fadas: estamos abandonando o desejo de virar princesas?

Tenho uma afilhada de 6 anos e, quando ela ainda não tinha completado 1 ano, viajei ao Rio e encontrei uma camiseta parecida com essa, que logo comprei para dar de presente. No lugar de “Futura Princesa”, estava estampado um belo “Futura Presidente”, trazendo desde já a ideia de que viver como princesa deve-se destinar aos Contos de Fadas. Não que Kate e Charlene tenham tomado más decisões em suas vidas, isso não podemos julgar. Mas que não se esqueça a importância de contar para as crianças de que mulher tem sim que estudar, crescer, seguir uma carreira e, claro, se quiser, casar, ter filhos, cachorro, papagaio e o que mais que vier no pacote. É uma questão de colocar na balança quais são seus anseios e aspirações, quais as privações que vêm junto a uma vida junto à realeza. E quanto a todas as outras garotas, que percebam que na auto-determinação da vida de plebéia é que está a grande diversão da vida.

Most of the girls in my generation grew up listening to fairy tales. Stories of countless princess who overcome a big problem when meeting Prince Charming. A lot has been said about the impact these stories can have on children – and how they create ideals that follow us when we grow up. But I believe the situation is changing. Recently, we witnessed two big Royal Weddings. Kate and Charlene joined the British and Monegasque Royal Families, by marrying William and Albert, respectively. In spite of all the attention the media has given to these stories, I also witnessed heaten debates on the current role of women and the interest for princes and fairy tales: are we abandoning the wishes to become princesses?

I have a 6 year-old goddaughter and, while she hadn’t even turned 1 yet, I traveled to Rio and found a t-shirt I right away bought her. Instead of “Future Princess” it said a nice “Future President”, carrying out the idea that living like a princess should be destined to fairy tales. I am not saying Kate and Charlene made the wrong decisions in their lives, I do not think we are in a position to judge that. But the importance to tell children that women have to study, grow up and have a career should not be forgotten. And then, if they want, they can get married, have kids, dogs, parakeets and whatever else comes with this package. It is about weighing in what are one’s wishes and aspirations, what sort of things one has to let go when they are part of a Royal Family. And to all the other girls, may they realize that one of life’s great gifts lies in self-determination.

Um novo post em um blog. Melhor, um novo blog. Desde que comecei a me familiarizar com a Internet, quando tinha uns 9 anos, sempre aproveitei para escrever. Quantos blog já criei, não faço ideia. Mantê-los já é outra história. Não faço promessas de que esse vá continuar por muito tempo ou entrar para a posteridade. Mas a vontade que tive hoje foi de criá-lo, então… Que assim seja! Para dividir histórias, viagens, lugares, pessoas… Enfim, essas coisas da vida que são muito melhores se divididas.
